SMALSI - School Motivation and Learning Strategies Inventory
Kathy Chatham Stroud, Ph.D., Cecil R. Reynolds, Ph.D.
Measure student learning strategies early and intervene proactively
Poor study skills, ineffective learning strategies, test anxiety-all of these things impede academic success. And they often go unrecognized until a student enters college and is placed in a remedial program.
With the new School Motivation and Learning Strategies Inventory (SMALSI), you can now measure the skills related to academic success early in a student's school career. This allows you to address any weaknesses proactively-rather than waiting for repeated academic failures to determine that a student needs help.
Assess academic motivation, learning strategies, and study habits
Designed for both special and general education students, this new self-report inventory assesses 10 primary constructs associated with academic motivation, learning strategies, and study habits-7 focusing on student strengths and 3 focusing on student liabilities:

Strengths: Study Strategies, Note-Taking/Listening Skills, Reading/Comprehension Strategies, Writing/Research Skills, Test-Taking Strategies, Organizational Techniques, Time Management
Liabilities: Low Academic Motivation, Test Anxiety, Concentration/Attention Difficulties

Based on more than 30 years of research, the SMALSI allows you to identify and directly target poor learning strategies. It is the tool that makes early intervention possible.
SMALSI Comprehensive Kit includes: Manual, Audio CD, 25 Child Test Forms, 1 set of Child Scoring Templates, 25 Child Profile Sheets, 25 Teen Test Forms, 1 set of Teen Scoring Templates, and 25 Teen Profile Sheets.

DP-3 Developmental Profile
Third Edition (Gerald D. Alpern, Ph.D.)
Ages: 6 to 19 years Testing Time: 10 to 15 minutes (less than 5 minutes for Short Form) Administration: Individual
This fully revised third edition of the Developmental Profile strengthens and updates an instrument already considered the best of its kind. Like previous versions, the new DP-3 evaluates children's functioning in five key areas, in just 20 to 40 minutes. This edition adds norm-based standard scores, an expanded age range, updated item content, clearer interpretive guidelines, a nationally representative standardization sample, suggested remediation activities, and unlimited computer scoring and interpretation. Designed to evaluate children from birth through 12 years, 11 months, the DP-3 includes 180 items, each describing a particular skill. The respondent simply indicates whether or not the child has mastered the skill in question.
The DP-3 provides a General Development score as well as the following scale scores:
  • Physical: Large- and small-muscle coordination, strength, stamina, flexibility, and sequential motor skills
  • Adaptive Behavior: Ability to cope independently with the environment- to eat, dress, work, use modern technology, and take care of self and others
  • Social-Emotional: Interpersonal abilities, social and emotional understanding, functional performance in social situations, and manner in which the child relates to friends, relatives, and adults
  • Cognitive: Intellectual abilities and skills prerequisite to academic achievement
  • Communication: Expressive and receptive communication skills, including written, spoken, and gestural language
Within each scale, basals and ceilings are used, so you don't have to administer all 180 items. Each scale has its own norms so you don't have to use all five scales if you're interested in just one. Typically, the DP-3 is administered as an interview, in which a parent or caregiver answers yesor- no questions about the child. Start and stop points ensure that you ask only age-appropriate questions, making the interview focused and efficient.
DP-3 Kit includes: Manual, 25 Interview Forms, and 25 Parent/Caregiver Checklists.

EDUCATIONAL APPLICATION OF THE WISC-IV - A Handbook of Interpretive Strategies and Remedial Recommendations
Charles L. Nicholson Ph.D., Charles L. Alcorn Ph.D., Bradley T. Erford Ph.D.
Here is an essential reference for psychologists who work in school settings. This convenient Handbook and Worksheet show you how to translate WISC-IV subtest score patterns into specific remedial activities designed to meet each child's needs.
The Handbook discusses full-scale and subtest interpretation, noting clinical and educational implications, the significance of discrepancies between IQ and achievement, and indicators of possible brain damage. It helps you make sound recommendations regarding educational placement and remediation, and it guides you in determining cutoffs for LD identification. Included in this edition are five case studies that demonstrate the use of the Worksheet/Interpretive Summary Form and illustrate psychological reports emphasizing recommendations beneficial to teachers. The final section, a teacher's guide, presents remedial recommendations and materials, grouped by four age levels: 6 to 8 years, 8 to 10 years, 10 to 12 years, and 12 to 16 years. In addition, it tells you where to obtain the recommended materials.
Educational Applications of the WISC-IV is also available on CD. Just enter subtest and index scores, and the program will give you a full report, with recommended activities that allow you to address problem areas identified by the WISC-IV. Features of the computer program include comparisons between subtest and index scores, calculation of relevant clinical indicators, and the option to enter achievement test scores so that you can see the discrepancy between ability and achievement.
Kit includes: Handbook and 25 Worksheet/Interpretive Summary Forms.

COMMON TIES - Living Together in a Multicultural World
Patricia del Valle, Ph.D., NCC, Maria Gondra, Psy.D., and Raysa Richardson, Ph.D.
Ages 8 to 12
When children enter a new culture, they often experience fear, anxiety, and stress. These children and their native-born peers are engaged in a socialization process - the former learning to navigate in a new environment, the latter learning to welcome children from unfamiliar cultures. Common Ties eases this process by helping children find shared feelings and experiences and accept differences in a non-divisive way.
To start, each player is given a "passport". The goal is to travel around the colorful game board, visiting seven geographic regions and answering questions posed on game cards. Appropriate answers are rewarded with tokens that players can insert in their passports.
Game cards address friendship, emotions, customs, responsibilities, family traditions, holidays, favorite activities, and more. To introduce a bit of geography and stimulate discussion about other cultures, some cards ask players to identify countries based on clues provided. In addition, blank cards are included so that you can create questions relevant to your particular group.
Common Ties helps newcomers learn and internalize the traditions, behaviors, and values of their new culture without losing their identities or respect for their original cultures. In a parallel process, it helps native-born children understand cultures different from their own.
For 2 to 4 players or teams.

BEST PRACTICES IN GIFTED EDUCATION
An Evidence-Based Guide
Best Practices in Gifted Education provides concise, up-todate, research-based advice to educators, administrators, and parents of gifted and talented youth. The 29 practices included in this volume are the result of an extensive examination of educational research on what works with talented youth. The interest in culturally diverse and low-income learners, the means to identify talents, and the need for curriculum that appropriately challenges high-ability youth constitute just a few of the 29 practices.
Each practice is organized into a chapter containing two sections: What We Know and What We Can Do. The first section briefly describes the practice and summarizes the research. The second section suggests what course of action a parent, teacher, or administrator might take at home, in the classroom, or at school. The book is a must-have for those who want a guide that makes a connection between research and practical action in gifted education.

SPM - Sensory Processing Measure
Main Classroom and School Environments Forms by Heather Miller Kuhaneck, M.S., OTR/L, Diana A. Henry, M.S., OTR/L, Tara J. Glennon, Ed.D., OTR/L, FAOTA
Home Form by L. Diane Parham, Ph.D., OTR/L, FAOTA, Cheryl Ecker, M.A., OTR/L

Ages: 5 to 12 years Administration Time: 15 to 20 minutes
With the Sensory Processing Measure (SPM), you can now get a complete picture of children's sensory functioning at home, at school, and in the community. Recognizing that sensory processing problems often manifest differently in different environments, this set of three integrated rating scales assesses sensory processing, praxis, and social participation in elementary school children. The assessment's unique multi-environment approach lets you see, for example, why a child who functions well in a highly structured classroom may have problems in a more relaxed setting. Firmly grounded in sensory integration theory, the SPM provides norm-referenced standard scores for two higher level integrative functions-praxis and social participation-and five sensory systems-visual, auditory, tactile, proprioceptive, and vestibular functioning. Within each system, it offers descriptive clinical information on processing vulnerabilities, including under- and overresponsiveness, sensory-seeking behavior, and perceptual problems. The SPM consists of three forms:
  • Home Form
  • Main Classroom Form
  • School Environments Form
The Home Form (75 items) is completed by the child's parent or homebased care provider. The Main Classroom Form (62 items) is filled out by the child's primary classroom teacher. And the School Environments Form (10 to 15 items per environment) is completed by other school personnel who work with and observe the child.

CSBS - Communication and Symbolic Behavior Scales
Normed Edition (Amy M. Wetherby, Ph.D., CCC-SLP Barry M. Prizant, Ph.D., CCC-SLP)
Ages: 12 years to adult Testing Time: 20 minutes Administration: Individual
Ages: 6 to 72 months Testing Time: 50 to 75 minutes Administration: Individual
CSBS is a norm-referenced, standardized instrument used to assess infants, toddlers, and preschoolers at risk for communication delays and impairments. CSBS used during natural play routines and other adult-child interactions- is different from other language assessment instruments. Its 22 5-point rating scales survey children's language skills as well as their symbolic development, which is demonstrated in the children's gestures, facial expressions, and play behaviors. Most important, CSBS is backed by technical data, it's curriculum compatible, and it comes packaged with everything professionals need to conduct and score an assessment. One of the best measures of early communication, the norm-referenced*, standardized CSBS uses parent interviews and naturalistic sampling procedures to collect crucial information not just on language skills, but on often-overlooked communicative behaviors like communicative functions, gestures, rate of communicating, positive affect, and gaze shifts. CSBS takes just 50-75 minutes for child assessment and 60-75 minutes for indepth scoring. Backed by technical data, CSBS is compatible with most developmental curricula and comes with everything professionals need to conduct and score assessments for children 8-24 months (or up to 72 months if developmental delays are present):
  • CAREGIVER QUESTIONNAIRE: Caregivers complete this 15-minute, qualitative questionnaire to provide background information.
  • BEHAVIOR SAMPLE: After the questionnaire is complete, professionals conduct the videotaped Behavior Sample as the caregiver interacts with the child using a naturalistic sampling procedure that includes communicative temptations, book sharing, symbolic play, language comprehension probes, and constructive play. Professionals use the Record Form to convert results to scores on 22 five-point scales, organized in seven clusters: Communicative Functions, Gestural Communicative Means, Vocal Communicative Means, Verbal Communicative Means, Reciprocity, Social-Affective Signaling, and Symbolic Behavior. This yields raw scores and scaled scores for the 22 scales, percentile ranks and standard scores for the seven clusters, a percentile rank and standard overall composite score, and norms by chronological age or language stage.
  • EXAMINER'S MANUAL: Includes technical data about CSBS, plus instructions on how to administer the questionnaire and sampling procedures, plan interventions, analyze the videotaped behavior samples, and score and interpret the assessment.
  • TOY KIT: Includes familiar play materials that entice spontaneous behavior.
  • 2 OUTLINE CARDS: Outline sampling procedures and directions for scoring.
  • 2 INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEOS: Demonstrate how to collect a sample and convert results into scores.
  • CSBS SCORING TUTORIAL: This manual, manual supplement, and set of 4 videos let users score selected segments of CSBS!", complete samples of one child, and compare scores with Wetherby and Prizant's scores.
*Supported by both field validation and psychometric studies.

The second edition of this unconventional handbook is a revised, expanded, and even more powerful version of the first work. Developed by school psychology practitioners, this text introduces such methods as planned confusion, disruptive word pictures, unconscious suggestion, double-bind predictions, off-the-wall interpretations, and even some straight-faced paradoxical assignments. It's perfect for educators who have had enough behavior management theory but not enough success in managing difficult students. Many of the methods presented are powerful and strategic in nature and are intended to effectively neutralize student resistance.
Outrageous Behavior Mod (OBM) is not intended for average kids who may be having a bad day. These methods were developed specifically for those hardcore "you can't make me" students. It has been stated that "... the more rigid, stubborn, and defiant a student is, the better these OBM methods work!" To help introduce the teacher to OBM practice, this book is filled with step-bystep protocols, scripts, coupons, behavior permits, stimulus cards, and wacky assignments for oppositional students.

TAPS-3 Test of Auditory Processing Skills
Nancy Martin, Rick Brownell
The Test of Auditory Processing Skills (TAPS-3) represents a very thorough reshaping of the Test of Auditory Perceptual Skills, Revised (previously authored by M. Gardner). The most obvious change is that there are no longer two "levels" of the test - the TAPS-3 offers seamless coverage for ages 4 through 18 years. The TAPS-3 measures what a person does with what is heard, and is intended to be used along with other tests as part of a battery. It is designed to be used by speech-language pathologists, audiologists, school psychologists, and other testing professionals.

TOPEL - Test of Preschool Early Literacy
Christopher J. Lonigan, Richard K. Wagner, Joseph K. Torgesen, Carol A. Rashotte
Ages: 3 to 5-11 Testing Time: 25 to 30 minutes Administration: Individual
Children entering kindergarten or first grade are expected to have sufficient knowledge of vocabulary, phonological awareness, and print knowledge. The Test of Preschool Early Literacy (TOPEL) is a theoretically sound instrument designed to identify preschoolers who are at risk for literacy problems. It is easy to administer. Early childhood educators, special educators, psychologists, diagnosticians, and other professionals who are interested in examining skills related to early literacy can administer the test. It provides valid and reliable raw scores, standard scores, and percentiles. The normative sample consists of 842 preschool-aged children (3 to 5 years).
The TOPEL has three principal uses:
  • IDENTIFICATION: Results from the TOPEL subtests are useful for documenting a child's print, oral vocabulary, and phonological awareness ability
  • DOCUMENTATION OF PROGRESS: Federal statutes, state laws, and/or school district policies at times require documentation of progress
  • RESEARCH: Educators can use this instrument to determine interventionrelated change or to select students for research participation
The TOPEL has three subtests. All the results of which are then combined to determine the "Composite Score" that ultimately best represents a child's emergent literacy skills:
  • PRINT KNOLEDGE - 36 items; measures alphabet knowledge and early knowledge about written language conventions and form; the child is asked to identify letters and written words, point to specific letters, name specific letters, identify letters associated with specific sounds, and say the sounds associated with specific letters
  • DEFINITIONAL VOCABULARY - 35 items; measures single-word oral vocabulary and definitional vocabulary (assesses both surface and deep vocabulary knowledge); the child is shown a picture and asked to tell what the picture is, and to describe one of its important features
  • PHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS - 27 items; measures word elision and blending abilities; the child is asked to say a word, then say what is left after dropping out specific sounds (elision) for the first 12 items; the child is asked to listen to separate sounds and combine them to form a word (blending) for the remaining 15 items
TOPEL Complete Kit includes: Examiner's Manual, Picture Book, and 25 Record Booklets, all in a sturdy storage box.

TOLD-P:4 Test of Language Development
Primary: Fourth Edition (Phyllis L. Newcomer, Donald D. Hammill)
Ages: 4-0 to 8-11 Testing Time: 1 hour Administration: Individual
The Test of Language Development-Primary: Fourth Edition (TOLD-P:4) assesses spoken language in young children. It is well constructed, reliable, practical, research-based, and theoretically sound. Professionals can use the TOLD-P:4 to (1) identify children who are significantly below their peers in oral language proficiency, (2) determine their specific strengths and weaknesses in oral language skills, (3) document their progress in remedial programs, and (4) measure oral language in research studies.

Subtests and Composites
The TOLD-P:4 has nine subtests that measure various aspects of oral language (described below). The results of these subtests can be combined to form composite scores for the major dimensions of language: semantics and grammar; listening, organizing, and speaking; and overall language ability.
  1. PICTURE VOCABULARY - measures a child's understanding of the meaning of spoken English words (semantics, listening)
  2. RELATIONAL VOCABULARY - measures a child's understanding and ability to orally express the relationships between two spoken stimulus words (semantics, organizing)
  3. ORAL VOCABULARY - measures a child's ability to give oral directions to common English words that are spoken by the examiner (semantics, speaking)
  4. SYNTACTIC UNDERSTANDING - measures a child's ability to comprehend the meaning of sentences (grammar, listening)
  5. SENTENCES IMITATION - measures a child's ability to imitate English sentences (grammar, organizing)
  6. MORPHOLOGICAL COMPLETION - measures a child's ability to recognize, understand, and use common English morphological forms (grammar, speaking)
  7. WORD DISCRIMINATION - measures a child's ability to recognize the differences in significant speech sounds (phonology, listening)
  8. WORD ANALYSIS - measures a child's ability to segment words into smaller phonemic units (phonology, organizing)
  9. WORD ARTICULATION - measures a child's ability to utter important English speech sounds (phonology, speaking)
TOLD-P:4 Complete Kit includes:Examiner's Manual, Picture Book, Clinical Reviews and Research Findings, and 25 Examiner/Record Booklets, all in a sturdy storage box. (© 2008)

TOLD-I:4 Test of Language Development
Intermediate: Fourth Edition (Donald D. Hammill, Phyllis L. Newcomer)
Ages: 8-0 to 17-11 Testing Time: 30 minutes to 1 hour Administration: Individual
The Test of Language Development-Intermediate: Fourth Edition (TOLD-I:4) is the best TOLD-I ever well constructed, reliable, practical, research-based, and theoretically sound. Professionals can use the TOLD-I:4 to (1) identify children who are significantly below their peers in oral language proficiency, (2) determine their specific strengths and weaknesses in oral language skills, (3) document their progress in remedial programs, and (4) measure oral language in research studies.
Subtests and Composites
The TOLD-I:4 comprises six subtests that measure semantics (i.e., meaning and thought) or grammar (i.e., syntax and morphology) skills. Two subtests measure listening abilities; two measure organizing abilities; and two measure speaking abilities. The combination of all six subtests represents overall Spoken Language.
  1. SENTENCE COMBINING - the child is to form one compound or complex sentence from two or more simple sentences spoken by the examiner (grammar, speaking)
  2. PICTURE VOCABULARY - the child is to point to one picture (of six per card) that best represents a series of two-word stimuli (semantics, listening)
  3. WORD ORDERING - the child is to form a complete, correct sentence from a randomly-ordered string of words, ranging from three to seven in length (grammar, organizing)
  4. RELATIONAL VOCABULARY - the child must tell how three words, spoken by the examiner, are alike (semantics, organizing)
  5. MORPHOLOGICAL COMPREHENSION - the child must distinguish between grammatically correct and incorrect sentences (grammar, listening)
  6. MULTIPLE MEANINGS - the examiner says a word to a child who responds by saying as many different meanings for that word as he/she can think of (semantics, speaking)

REEL-3 Receptive-Expressive Emergent Language Test
Third Edition (Kenneth R. Bzoch, Richard League, Virginia L. Brown)
Ages: Birth through 3 Testing Time: 20 minutes Administration: Individual
The Receptive-Expressive Emergent Language Test-Third Edition (REEL-3) was designed to help you identify infants and toddlers who have language impairments or who have other disabilities that affect language development. It is especially useful as an assessment and planning instrument in Early Childhood Intervention programs. The REEL-3 has two core subtests, Receptive Language and Expressive Language, and a new supplementary subtest, Inventory of Vocabulary Words. Results are obtained from a caregiver interview.
The REEL-3 is based on a contemporary linguistic model. It includes current studies relating to normative base, reliability, and validity. The normative sample includes 1,112 infants and toddlers from around the nation. The demographic characteristics of the sample were matched to those of the United States according to the 2000 census. The normative sample was stratified on the basis of age, gender, race, ethnic group membership, and geographic location. Standard scores, percentile ranks, and age equivalents are provided.
The average reliability coefficients for all the test scores are high (exceeding .90). Test/retest studies show that the REEL-3 is stable over time. The potential bias of every item on the test on the basis of gender and ethnic group was studied. In all, no items showed bias beyond a negligible effect size. Validity data are reported as well, documenting the test's relationship to the Developmental Assessment of Young Children (DAYC), the Early Language Milestone Scale-Second Edition (ELM SCALE-2), and the Cognitive Abilities Scale-Second Edition (CAS-2).
REEL-3 Complete Kit includes: Examiner's Manual and 25 Profile/Examiner Record Booklets. (2003)
