When children enter a new culture, they often experience
fear, anxiety, and stress. These children and their
native-born peers are engaged in a socialization process
- the former learning to navigate in a new environment,
the latter learning to welcome children from
unfamiliar cultures. Common Ties eases this process by
helping children find shared feelings and experiences
and accept differences in a non-divisive way.
To start, each player is given a "passport". The goal is
to travel around the colorful game board, visiting seven
geographic regions and answering questions posed on
game cards. Appropriate answers are rewarded with
tokens that players can insert in their passports.
Game cards address friendship, emotions, customs,
responsibilities, family traditions, holidays, favorite
activities, and more. To introduce a bit of geography
and stimulate discussion about other cultures, some
cards ask players to identify countries based on clues
provided. In addition, blank cards are included so that
you can create questions relevant to your particular
group.
Common Ties helps newcomers learn and internalize
the traditions, behaviors, and values of their new
culture without losing their identities or respect for
their original cultures. In a parallel process, it helps
native-born children understand cultures different
from their own.

With the Sensory Processing Measure (SPM), you can now get a complete
picture of children's sensory functioning at home, at school, and in the
community. Recognizing that sensory processing problems often manifest
differently in different environments, this set of three integrated rating
scales assesses sensory processing, praxis, and social participation in
elementary school children. The assessment's unique multi-environment

Firmly grounded in sensory integration theory, the SPM provides norm-referenced

CSBS is a norm-referenced, standardized
instrument used to assess infants, toddlers,
and preschoolers at risk for communication delays and impairments.
CSBS used during natural play routines and other adult-child interactions-

knowledge. The Test of Preschool Early Literacy (TOPEL) is a theoretically
sound instrument designed to identify preschoolers who are at risk
for literacy problems. It is easy to administer. Early childhood educators,
special educators, psychologists, diagnosticians, and other professionals
who are interested in examining skills related to early literacy can administer
the test. It provides valid and reliable raw scores, standard scores,
and percentiles. The normative sample consists of 842 preschool-aged

The TOPEL has three principal uses:

TOLD-I:4 to (1) identify children who are significantly below their peers in
oral language proficiency, (2) determine their specific strengths and weaknesses
in oral language skills, (3) document their progress in remedial
programs, and (4) measure oral language in research studies.
Subtests and Composites
The TOLD-I:4 comprises six subtests that measure semantics (i.e.,
meaning and thought) or grammar (i.e., syntax and morphology) skills.
Two subtests measure listening abilities; two measure organizing abilities;
and two measure speaking abilities. The combination of all six subtests
represents overall Spoken Language.
- SENTENCE COMBINING - the child is to form one compound or complex
sentence from two or more simple sentences spoken
by the examiner (grammar, speaking)
- PICTURE VOCABULARY - the child is to point to one picture (of six per
card) that best represents a series of two-word stimuli
(semantics, listening)
- WORD ORDERING - the child is to form a complete, correct sentence
from a randomly-ordered string of words, ranging from
three to seven in length (grammar, organizing)
- RELATIONAL VOCABULARY - the child must tell how three words, spoken
by the examiner, are alike (semantics, organizing)
- MORPHOLOGICAL COMPREHENSION - the child must distinguish between
grammatically correct and incorrect sentences (grammar,
listening)
- MULTIPLE MEANINGS - the examiner says a word to a child who
responds by saying as many different meanings for that
word as he/she can think of (semantics, speaking)

The Receptive-Expressive Emergent
Language Test-Third Edition (REEL-3)
was designed to help you identify infants
and toddlers who have language impairments
or who have other disabilities
that affect language development. It is
especially useful as an assessment and
planning instrument in Early Childhood
Intervention programs. The REEL-3 has
two core subtests, Receptive Language
and Expressive Language, and a new
supplementary subtest, Inventory of
Vocabulary Words. Results are obtained
from a caregiver interview.
The REEL-3 is based on a contemporary linguistic model. It includes current
studies relating to normative base, reliability, and validity. The normative
sample includes 1,112 infants and toddlers from around the nation.
The demographic characteristics of the sample were matched to those of
the United States according to the 2000 census. The normative sample
was stratified on the basis of age, gender, race, ethnic group membership,
and geographic location. Standard scores, percentile ranks, and age
equivalents are provided.
The average reliability coefficients for all the test scores are high (exceeding
.90). Test/retest studies show that the REEL-3 is stable over time.
The potential bias of every item on the test on the basis of gender and
ethnic group was studied. In all, no items showed bias beyond a negligible
effect size. Validity data are reported as well, documenting the test's
relationship to the Developmental Assessment of Young Children (DAYC), the Early Language Milestone Scale-Second Edition (ELM
SCALE-2), and the Cognitive Abilities Scale-Second Edition
(CAS-2).

The Functional Independence Skills
Handbook, or FISH, is used to assess a
person's ability to perform certain functional
activities in daily life. It was developed
for special education teachers,
paraeducators, and parents working
with individuals with severe developmental
disabilities. The outcome of the
program, when successful, is a direct
increase in personal independence in
those with autism, mental retardation,
and related disorders.
FISH contains (a) an assessment
instrument that can assist the professional
in determining goals for future
educational or developmental training
programs for a person with developmental
disabilities and (b) sample lesson plans with teaching techniques
for each item evaluated. The assessment directly relates to the accompanying
curriculum.
Although targeted toward people with developmental disabilities, this

anyone with cognitive deficits, school-age through adult. It is a criterion-referenced

organized according to seven domains: Adaptive Behavior Skills, Affective
