COMMON TIES - Living Together in a Multicultural World
Patricia del Valle, Ph.D., NCC, Maria Gondra, Psy.D., and Raysa Richardson,
Ph.D. Ages 8 to 12
When children enter a new culture, they often experience
fear, anxiety, and stress. These children and their
native-born peers are engaged in a socialization process
- the former learning to navigate in a new environment,
the latter learning to welcome children from
unfamiliar cultures. Common Ties eases this process by
helping children find shared feelings and experiences
and accept differences in a non-divisive way.
To start, each player is given a "passport". The goal is
to travel around the colorful game board, visiting seven
geographic regions and answering questions posed on
game cards. Appropriate answers are rewarded with
tokens that players can insert in their passports.
Game cards address friendship, emotions, customs,
responsibilities, family traditions, holidays, favorite
activities, and more. To introduce a bit of geography
and stimulate discussion about other cultures, some
cards ask players to identify countries based on clues
provided. In addition, blank cards are included so that
you can create questions relevant to your particular
group.
Common Ties helps newcomers learn and internalize
the traditions, behaviors, and values of their new
culture without losing their identities or respect for
their original cultures. In a parallel process, it helps
native-born children understand cultures different
from their own. For 2 to 4 players or teams.

SPM - Sensory Processing Measure
Main Classroom and School Environments Forms by
Heather Miller Kuhaneck, M.S., OTR/L,
Diana A. Henry, M.S., OTR/L,
Tara J. Glennon, Ed.D., OTR/L, FAOTA
Home Form by
L. Diane Parham, Ph.D., OTR/L, FAOTA, Cheryl Ecker, M.A., OTR/L
Ages: 5 to 12 years
Administration Time: 15 to 20 minutes
With the Sensory Processing Measure (SPM), you can now get a complete
picture of children's sensory functioning at home, at school, and in the
community. Recognizing that sensory processing problems often manifest
differently in different environments, this set of three integrated rating
scales assesses sensory processing, praxis, and social participation in
elementary school children. The assessment's unique multi-environment
approach lets you see, for example, why a child who functions well in a
highly structured classroom may have problems in a more relaxed setting.
Firmly grounded in sensory integration theory, the SPM provides norm-referenced
standard scores for two higher level integrative functions-praxis
and social participation-and five sensory systems-visual, auditory,
tactile, proprioceptive, and vestibular functioning. Within each system,
it offers descriptive clinical information on processing vulnerabilities,
including under- and overresponsiveness, sensory-seeking behavior, and
perceptual problems.
The SPM consists of three forms:
- Home Form
- Main Classroom Form
- School Environments Form
The Home Form (75 items) is completed by the child's parent or homebased
care provider. The Main Classroom Form (62 items) is filled out by
the child's primary classroom teacher. And the School Environments Form
(10 to 15 items per environment) is completed by other school personnel
who work with and observe the child.
SPM Comprehensive Kit includes:
Manual, 25 Home AutoScore!" Forms,
25 Main Classroom AutoScore!" Forms, and

CSBS - Communication and
Symbolic Behavior Scales
Normed Edition (Amy M. Wetherby, Ph.D., CCC-SLP
Barry M. Prizant, Ph.D., CCC-SLP) Ages: 12 years to adult
Testing Time: 20 minutes
Administration: Individual Ages: 6 to 72 months
Testing Time: 50 to 75 minutes
Administration: Individual
CSBS is a norm-referenced, standardized
instrument used to assess infants, toddlers,
and preschoolers at risk for communication delays and impairments.
CSBS used during natural play routines and other adult-child interactions-
is different from other language assessment instruments. Its 22 5-point
rating scales survey children's language skills as well as their symbolic
development, which is demonstrated in the children's gestures, facial
expressions, and play behaviors. Most important, CSBS is backed by
technical data, it's curriculum compatible, and it comes packaged with
everything professionals need to conduct and score an assessment.
One of the best measures of early communication, the norm-referenced*,
standardized CSBS uses parent interviews and naturalistic sampling procedures
to collect crucial information not just on language skills, but on
often-overlooked communicative behaviors like communicative functions,
gestures, rate of communicating, positive affect, and gaze shifts. CSBS
takes just 50-75 minutes for child assessment and 60-75 minutes for indepth
scoring. Backed by technical data, CSBS is compatible with most
developmental curricula and comes with everything professionals need to
conduct and score assessments for children 8-24 months (or up to 72
months if developmental delays are present):
- CAREGIVER QUESTIONNAIRE: Caregivers complete this 15-minute,
qualitative questionnaire to provide background information.
- BEHAVIOR SAMPLE: After the questionnaire is complete, professionals
conduct the videotaped Behavior Sample as the caregiver interacts with
the child using a naturalistic sampling procedure that includes communicative
temptations, book sharing, symbolic play, language comprehension
probes, and constructive play. Professionals use the Record Form
to convert results to scores on 22 five-point scales, organized in seven
clusters: Communicative Functions, Gestural Communicative Means,
Vocal Communicative Means, Verbal Communicative Means, Reciprocity,
Social-Affective Signaling, and Symbolic Behavior. This yields raw scores
and scaled scores for the 22 scales, percentile ranks and standard
scores for the seven clusters, a percentile rank and standard overall
composite score, and norms by chronological age or language stage.
- EXAMINER'S MANUAL: Includes technical data about CSBS, plus
instructions on how to administer the questionnaire and sampling procedures,
plan interventions, analyze the videotaped behavior samples,
and score and interpret the assessment.
- TOY KIT: Includes familiar play
materials that entice spontaneous
behavior.
- 2 OUTLINE CARDS: Outline
sampling procedures and
directions for scoring.
- 2 INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEOS: Demonstrate how to collect
a sample and convert
results into scores.
- CSBS SCORING TUTORIAL: This manual, manual supplement, and set
of 4 videos let users score selected segments of CSBS!", complete
samples of one child, and compare scores with Wetherby and
Prizant's scores.

OUTRAGEOUS BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION
Second Edition
(Barry T. Christian) The second edition of this unconventional
handbook is a revised, expanded, and
even more powerful version of the first
work. Developed by school psychology
practitioners, this text introduces such
methods as planned confusion, disruptive
word pictures, unconscious suggestion,
double-bind predictions, off-the-wall interpretations,
and even some straight-faced
paradoxical assignments. It's perfect for
educators who have had enough behavior
management theory but not enough
success in managing difficult students.
Many of the methods presented are
powerful and strategic in nature and
are intended to effectively neutralize
student resistance.
Outrageous Behavior Mod (OBM) is not
intended for average kids who may be
having a bad day. These methods were
developed specifically for those hardcore "you can't make me" students. It
has been stated that "... the more rigid,
stubborn, and defiant a student is, the
better these OBM methods work!"
To help introduce the teacher to OBM
practice, this book is filled with step-bystep
protocols, scripts, coupons, behavior
permits, stimulus cards, and wacky
assignments for oppositional students.

TAPS-3 Test of Auditory Processing Skills
Nancy Martin, Rick Brownell
The Test of Auditory Processing Skills (TAPS-3) represents a very thorough reshaping of the Test of Auditory
Perceptual Skills, Revised (previously authored by M. Gardner). The most obvious change is that there are no longer two "levels" of the
test - the TAPS-3 offers seamless coverage for ages 4 through 18 years. The TAPS-3 measures what a person
does with what is heard, and is intended to be used along with other tests as part of a battery. It is designed to be used by speech-language
pathologists, audiologists, school psychologists, and other testing professionals.

TOPEL - Test of Preschool Early Literacy
Christopher J. Lonigan, Richard K. Wagner, Joseph K. Torgesen, Carol A. Rashotte Ages: 3 to 5-11
Testing Time: 25 to 30 minutes
Administration: Individual Children entering kindergarten or first grade are expected to have
sufficient knowledge of vocabulary, phonological awareness, and print
knowledge. The Test of Preschool Early Literacy (TOPEL) is a theoretically
sound instrument designed to identify preschoolers who are at risk
for literacy problems. It is easy to administer. Early childhood educators,
special educators, psychologists, diagnosticians, and other professionals
who are interested in examining skills related to early literacy can administer
the test. It provides valid and reliable raw scores, standard scores,
and percentiles. The normative sample consists of 842 preschool-aged
children (3 to 5 years).
The TOPEL has three principal uses:
- IDENTIFICATION: Results from the TOPEL subtests are useful for
documenting a child's print, oral vocabulary, and phonological
awareness ability
- DOCUMENTATION OF PROGRESS: Federal statutes, state laws, and/or
school district policies at times require documentation of
progress
- RESEARCH: Educators can use this instrument to determine interventionrelated
change or to select students for research participation
The TOPEL has three subtests. All the results of which are then combined
to determine the "Composite Score" that ultimately best represents a
child's emergent literacy skills:
- PRINT KNOLEDGE - 36 items; measures alphabet knowledge and
early knowledge about written language conventions and form;
the child is asked to identify letters and written words, point to
specific letters, name specific letters, identify letters associated
with specific sounds, and say the sounds associated with
specific letters
- DEFINITIONAL VOCABULARY - 35 items; measures single-word oral
vocabulary and definitional vocabulary (assesses both surface
and deep vocabulary knowledge); the child is shown a picture
and asked to tell what the picture is, and to describe one of its
important features
- PHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS - 27 items; measures word elision and
blending abilities; the child is asked to say a word, then say what
is left after dropping out specific sounds (elision) for the first 12
items; the child is asked to listen to separate sounds and combine
them to form a word (blending) for the remaining 15 items
TOPEL Complete Kit includes: Examiner's Manual, Picture Book, and 25 Record
Booklets, all in a sturdy storage box.

REEL-3 Receptive-Expressive Emergent Language Test
Third Edition
(Kenneth R. Bzoch, Richard League, Virginia L. Brown) Ages: Birth through 3
Testing Time: 20 minutes
Administration: Individual
The Receptive-Expressive Emergent
Language Test-Third Edition (REEL-3)
was designed to help you identify infants
and toddlers who have language impairments
or who have other disabilities
that affect language development. It is
especially useful as an assessment and
planning instrument in Early Childhood
Intervention programs. The REEL-3 has
two core subtests, Receptive Language
and Expressive Language, and a new
supplementary subtest, Inventory of
Vocabulary Words. Results are obtained
from a caregiver interview.
The REEL-3 is based on a contemporary linguistic model. It includes current
studies relating to normative base, reliability, and validity. The normative
sample includes 1,112 infants and toddlers from around the nation.
The demographic characteristics of the sample were matched to those of
the United States according to the 2000 census. The normative sample
was stratified on the basis of age, gender, race, ethnic group membership,
and geographic location. Standard scores, percentile ranks, and age
equivalents are provided.
The average reliability coefficients for all the test scores are high (exceeding
.90). Test/retest studies show that the REEL-3 is stable over time.
The potential bias of every item on the test on the basis of gender and
ethnic group was studied. In all, no items showed bias beyond a negligible
effect size. Validity data are reported as well, documenting the test's
relationship to the Developmental Assessment of Young Children (DAYC), the Early Language Milestone Scale-Second Edition (ELM
SCALE-2), and the Cognitive Abilities Scale-Second Edition
(CAS-2).

RIGHT LINE PAPER
Raised Line Paper
Right-Line Paper is a unique product designed to be used by individuals
who have difficulty staying in the lines of regular writing paper. Both
children and adults can benefit from this transitional writing tool. This
unique paper provides immediate feedback and helps motivate students to
improve their writing skills.
Right-Line Paper has a raised line superimposed on the printed line. This
raised line stimulates proprioceptive feedback-the writer can feel the
line. The printed line is green to distinguish it from pencil or pen marks.
The 8.5"x 11" bright white paper comes in a narrow and wide rule. The
wide-rule paper has a dashed line between each raised line, to be used as
a guide for letter formation.
Right-Line Paper was designed for children with learning disabilities,
individuals with orthopedic disabilities or partial sight, and adult rehabilitation
patients.
