Understanding Occupataional Vocabulary is a practical, community-reference occupational vocabulary-development curriculum.  The program can be used as part of any language arts curriculum or as a component of a preemployment class.  Secondary special education staff will find this program suitable for use in inclusive or special education settings.  Speech and language pathologists will find the targeted occupational vocabulary words motivational for adolescents or young adults who have limited hearing voabularies or functional language development needs.

The 52 occupational vocabulary words were developed from a validated list of important occupational terms that students need to know vefore they enter the adult working world.  The user guide includes a brief description of why the 52 words were selected for the validated list, and it introduces the individual lesson plans and accompanying materials, giving suggestions for how to use them.  It also discusses the target group, students in Grades 7 through 10, explaining why these adolescents could benefirt greatly from occupational vocabulary instruction.

In addition to the user guide, three decks of vocabulary cards are provided in the book.  Deck A cards have the word and an illustartion of the word, Deck B cards show each word and its definition, and Deck C shows each word and its use in a sentence.  You'll also get an assessment for determining a student's present level of understanding of the 52 occupational vocabulary words.  This performance indicator helps identify a student's occupational vocaublary needs and acts as a curriculum-based assessment.
